COUNTRYSIDE BEFORE MEMORY

Sinvaravatn’s interests often trace back to landscape paintings with philosophical questions about the space in which we exist. He believes that a definition of one thing is always related to the position of the definition giver. The series of works "Countryside Before Memory" provokes questions of the origin of conventional landscape images, presented through four Thai rural landscape paintings that display the transition of four periods of the day, all of which were created in Sinvaravatn’s studio. The painting process coincides with the remembrance of a distant place. Sinvaravatn tries to connect his personal memories to social contexts, tracing back to the American Era in Thailand. The First National Economic Development Plan declaration caused a drastic change in rural areas and the emergence of infrastructure funded by the American government, making steel rods and concrete no longer just construction materials. They represented a stream of world capitalism that infiltrated rural areas of Thailand, thus creating a dialogue between various political ideologies that enforced the belief that people’s lives would be peaceful. Sinvaravatn was born in 1997 amidst the rise of globalization. He believes the variation of capitalism plays a part in the perception of rural areas. Thus, the rural landscape paintings are re-written with the skepticism of the familiar rural images and a recompiled memory imparted through his essay film.

"Countryside Before Memory" participated in the exhibition  The Place of Memories at SAC Gallery (2021), Future Tense: Imagining the Unknown Future, Contemplating the Cold War Past at Jim Thompson Art Center (2021) and was selected to be screened at the St. Moritz Art Film Festival (2023).

ชนบทก่อนความทรงจำ

วัชรนนท์มีความสนใจต่อภาพทิวทัศน์ในฐานะคําถามเชิงปรัชญาต่อพื้นที่ที่เราดํารงอยู่ เขาเชื่อว่าการให้ความหมายต่อสิ่งใดสิ่งหนึ่งย่อมสัมพันธ์กับการจัดวางตัวตนของผู้ให้ความหมายนั้นๆ ผลงานชุด "ชนบทก่อนความทรงจำ" เป็นผลงานที่ตั้งคําถามถึงที่มาที่ไปของภาพทิวทัศน์ชนบทที่เราคุ้นชิน นําเสนอผ่านจิตรกรรมทิวทัศน์ชนบทไทยทั้งสี่ชิ้น ที่แสดงออกถึงสี่ช่วงเวลาที่เปลี่ยนไประหว่างวัน ทั้งหมดถูกเขียนขึ้นภายในสตูดิโอของวัชรนนท์ กระบวนการทางจิตรกรรมเกิดขึ้นพร้อมๆกับการระลึกถึงสถานที่ที่ห่างไกลออกไป เขาพยายามเชื่อมโยงความทรงจําส่วนตัวเข้ากับบริบททางสังคม สืบสาวเรื่องราวย้อนกลับไปไกลถึงยุคอเมริกันในประเทศไทย ตั้งแต่การประกาศใช้แผนพัฒนาเศรษฐกิจและสังคมแห่งชาติฉบับที่ 1 ที่ได้สร้างความเปลี่ยนแปลงขนานใหญ่ให้แก่พื้นที่ชนบท การเกิดขึ้นของโครงสร้างพื้นฐานต่างๆที่ได้รับการสนับสนุนจากรัฐบาลอเมริกัน ทําให้แท่งเหล็กและคอนกรีตไม่ได้เป็นเพียงแค่วัสดุปลูกสร้างอีกต่อไป แต่ยังแสดงถึงสายธารของทุนระดับโลกที่ได้เข้ามาปะทะสังสรรค์กับพื้นที่ชนบทไทยอีกด้วย ทั้งได้สร้างบทสนทนาระหว่างอุดมการณ์ทางการเมืองต่างๆ ที่ต่างก็เชื่อว่าจะนําพาผู้คนไปสู่วิถีชีวิตที่สงบสุขได้ วัชรนนท์เกิดในปี 1997 ภายใต้บรรยากาศของโลกาภิวัฒน์ เขาเชื่อว่าความผันแปรของระบบทุนนิยมมีส่วนในการกําหนดการรับรู้ต่อพื้นที่ชนบท ภาพจิตรกรรมทิวทัศน์ชนบทถูกเขียนขึ้นอีกครั้งบนความกังขาที่มีต่อภาพชนบทที่คุ้นชิน และร้อยเรียงความทรงจำขึ้นใหม่บอกเล่าควบคู่ไปกับภาพยนตร์ความเรียง

ผลงานชุด "ชนบทก่อนความทรงจำ" ได้ร่วมแสดงในนิทรรศการ The Place of Memories จัดแสดงที่เอส เอ ซี แกลเลอรี (2021) และนิทรรศการ Future Tense: Imagining the Unknown Future, Contemplating the Cold War Past  จัดแสดงที่หอศิลป์บ้านจิม ทอมป์สัน (2021) อีกทั้งได้รับคัดเลือกเข้าฉายในเทศกาลภาพยนตร์ St. Moritz Art Film Festival (2023)
