THE WILDS
A FILM BY CHIU CHIH-HUA

Chiu Chih-Hua’s works explore the uncertainty of time. Before his residency at Silpakorn University, the artist initially wanted to create a work based on how the social state of Thailand was depicted through local media. However, during his residency, Chiu’s focus shifted to interviews and documentation to understand how the youth navigated the uncertainty of the world before entering society. Chiu later edited the interviews into scripts and commenced on further shooting projects. ​ ​

In the work 'The Wilds' ,Chiu explores how “youth” faces the real world. Two performers in student uniforms appear and wander in scenes that seem ordinary and surreal at the same time. For the “youth,” the perception of time can be vastly different; time can be accumulated, consumed, used aggressively, or put on the side. In protective objects that seem to homogenize time (such as school uniforms and classroom tables and chairs), the uncertainty of the future becomes a repeated construction formed through the compression and expansion of psychological time. Through “youth,” a period that is at the same time radical and filled with anxiety, Chiu reexamines how they tackle the world they are about to face.

Moreover, Chiu experiments with ways to not confine spaces within images. The artist separates the projects into several stages: the first stage of shooting is entirely completed by performers following instructions. During the presentation, the space becomes the shooting scene which further reveals the relationship between the presentation and its setting. Then, the performers are asked to reinterpret and add dubbing to the images. Through the several stages of the shooting process, the line between the photographer, the photographed, and the viewer becomes blurred, further accentuating the uncertainty in the relationships of “youth.”​

ผลงานของชิว ชิฮวาสำรวจความไม่แน่นอนของเวลา ในช่วงแรกก่อนที่เขาจะเข้าพำนักในมหาวิทยาลัยศิลปากร ชิวต้องการสร้างสรรค์ผลงานโดยอิงจากสภาพสังคมของประเทศไทยที่ถูกนำเสนอผ่านสื่อท้องถิ่น อย่างไรก็ตาม ในระหว่างที่เขาพำนักชิวได้เคลื่อนความสนใจมาสู่การสัมภาษณ์และการถ่ายทำสารคดี เพื่อทำความเข้าใจว่าวัยรุ่นหนุ่มสาวได้สำรวจความไม่แน่นอนของโลกก่อนเข้าสู่สังคมอย่างไร  หลังจากนั้นชิวได้ดัดแปลงบทสัมภาษณ์ให้กลายเป็นบทภาพยนต์และเริ่มถ่ายทำโปรเจ็คต่อไป ​ ​

'The Wilds' ภาพยนตร์ว่าด้วยการต้องเผชิญหน้ากับโลกจริงของวัยรุ่นหนุ่มสาว นักแสดงชายสองคนในชุดนักศึกษาปรากฏกายขึ้นและเดินเล่นไปในฉากต่างๆที่ดูทั้งสามัญดาษดื่นหากพิลึกประหลาดในคราวเดียว สำหรับ "วัยรุ่น" การรับรู้เวลาของพวกเขานั้นต่างออกไป สำหรับพวกเขาเวลานั้นสะสมได้ บริโภคได้ ใช้อย่างฟุมเฟือยได้ หรือทิ้งๆขว้างๆก็ได้ ท่ามกลางวัตถุที่ได้รับการปกป้องในเวลาที่ไร้เวลา (เช่น ชุดนักเรียน ห้องเรียน โต๊ะและเก้าอี้) ความไม่แน่นอนของอนาคต กลายเป็นการก่อร่างซ้ำไปซ้ำมาผ่านการบีบอัดและขยายออกของการรับรู้เวลาทางใจ การเป็น "วัยรุ่น" ได้กลายเป็นการฉายภาพช่วงเวลาที่สุดขั้วที่สุดและขณะเดียวกันก็ถมเต็มไปด้วยความวิตกกังวลที่สุดด้วย

นอกจากนี้ ชิวได้ทดลองกับแนวทางการสร้างผลงานที่นอกเหนือจากงานด้านภาพ เขาแบ่งกระบวนการออกเป็นหลายขั้นตอน โดยขั้นตอนแรกของการถ่ายทำคือให้นักแสดงทำตามบทบาทที่ตนได้รับ ในระหว่างการจัดแสดงพื้นที่แกลเลอรีได้กลายเป็นฉากถ่ายทำที่เผยให้เห็นความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างการจัดแสดงและกระบวนการแก้ไขเพิ่มเติม จากนั้นนักแสดงจะถูกขอให้ตีความใหม่และเพิ่มบทสนทนาลงไปในภาพยนตร์ กระบวนการถ่ายทำหลายขั้นตอนทำให้เส้นแบ่งระหว่างผู้ถ่ายทำ ผู้ถูกถ่ายทำ และผู้ชมถูกพร่าเลือน เป็นการตอกย้ำถึงความไม่มั่นใจต่อความไม่แน่นอนในชีวิตของ "วัยรุ่นหนุ่มสาว"
