RIVER, FIELDS, AND THE MILL
Suphan Buri has functioned as both a frontier city and one of Thailand’s most significant agricultural centres since the Ayutthaya period. Although its role as a frontier city has gradually diminished, its importance as a major food-producing region continues to this day. Amid shifts in economic systems, patterns of migration and successive state-led development policies, agricultural abundance has never depended solely upon natural conditions. It also relies upon technology and human intervention, from land clearing and canal excavation to industrial production processes. These infrastructures form the foundation of modern agriculture, which operates not merely for subsistence, but as part of global capitalism.
During the first half of the twentieth century, Robert Larimore Pendleton, Ph.D., a geographer and geologist from Johns Hopkins University who served as an agricultural adviser to the Thai government, travelled extensively throughout Thailand to survey soils and support agricultural development, including in Suphan Buri. At the time, river and canal networks functioned both as crucial agricultural infrastructure and as primary transportation routes for local communities. Much of Pendleton’s travel took place by water, during which he documented riverside life through extensive photography. These photographs function both as artistic works and as historical evidence. They also inspired Chalit Saphaphak to create the photographic series Shaping the Flow, reflecting upon the past while constructing a dialogue across time that connects history with the present through the perspective of a contemporary photographer.
At the same time, developments in agricultural knowledge significantly improved the productivity of Thai farmers, particularly in rice cultivation, where production increased dramatically. This transformation directly corresponded with the rise of rice mills as one of the central economic mechanisms of Suphan Buri. “Buranakit Rice Mill”, founded by Chinese-Thai entrepreneurs who were Preecha Raksorn’s ancestors, may no longer operate today, yet its architectural structure and machinery continue to function within Preecha’s memory. He reconstructs the structure of the riverside rice mill along the Tha Chin River, transforming it into a key material source for the work Family Mill.
At the same time, Thai people do not consume rice alone. We also consume symbolic images of the beautiful rural rice field. These are images often assumed to represent nature itself. Yet the uniformly green rice fields that appear so natural have all passed through processes of land clearing, cultivation and human intervention. Through It’s Not Easy Being Green, Vacharanont Sinvaravatn reimagines this landscape painting tradition in order to examine how carefully constructed beauty shapes perceptions and emotional responses towards rural life.
